March 14, 1940 (Umarbe)
Umarbe's father, known well among the islanders as a man with rock solid resolve, undertook the strenuous mission of starting a local business to handle upslipping and downslipping of vessels in North Maldives
Traditional Methodology
Vessels were uplifted and down slipped in a communal gathering of the village with both men and women participating. The women were responsible for pulling the vessel inland as well as the downslipping afterwards all via the help of the strong ropes attached securely to the vessel. The men supervised the process keeping keen eyes on the subject vessel to mitigate any damage to the vessel.
